In 2024, the Maiorino family bought Harp & Crown, a West Catawba Avenue pub that had been open for about a decade. Soon after, the space across the shared entryway opened up. The Maiorinos spent the next 16 months turning it into a second room, and the main thing they wanted to change was the noise. Cornelius Today reported that the new room, The Alleyway, was designed to feel different from the area's sports and live-music spots. It opened on October 1 with candles in place of screens.
The Alleyway matters beyond one new place for a drink. Most evening venues in Cornelius were built for amplified music and late hours, and most of them sit along West Catawba and the shoreline. The Alleyway is the first room in town built mainly so people can hear each other. It opened next to a rock-band pub, not in Old Town, which says a lot about where the town's evenings happen.
A room with one television
Harp & Crown's official site lists the address as 19930 West Catawba Avenue, Suite 130, and The Alleyway is next door. Here's what Cornelius Today's opening report describes:
- Seating: 75 seats, built around specialty cocktails instead of draft beer or sports.
- The menu: about 20 signature drinks. Some have a Celtic theme that nods to the pub next door, including the Dublin Express, the Celtic Breeze and the Fake Foolery.
- Food: charcuterie boards and appetizers, made on site and in the Harp & Crown kitchen.
- The room: walls painted black to show off the building's exposed wood beams, a chandelier and candles throughout. One TV is tucked into the far end.
- The walls: 1920s-style portraits of Harp & Crown regulars and friends. The owners made them by turning photos into period portraits with AI.
- Music: jazz, mostly on weekends, played as background atmosphere instead of a rock-band set.
Maiorino explained the idea plainly. "It's not going to be the loud music," she told Cornelius Today. "We want our own flavor." She also called it "more connection and that chill vibe."
The lounge also plans monthly themed parties with ticketed admission. The first, a Roaring '20s night with a DJ and dancing, was planned for October.
Same patio, different bandstand
"The patios connect," Maiorino told Cornelius Today, explaining why the second space made sense. Harp & Crown still books bands. A week in mid-October showed how the two rooms now split one property, based on the venue-submitted schedule in Cornelius Today's Live at the Lake listing. Every show below was free.
| Night | Harp & Crown | The Alleyway |
|---|---|---|
| Wed., Oct. 14 | John Sullivan, acoustic, 6 to 9 p.m. | Michelle Renee, jazz and dance, 7 to 10 p.m. |
| Thu., Oct. 15 | No listing | Gio's Jazz Trio, 7 to 10 p.m. |
| Fri., Oct. 16 | Port City Posse, rock, 7 to 10 p.m. | Bobby Thomas Trio, jazz, 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. |
| Sat., Oct. 17 | Velcrows, rock, 7 to 10 p.m. | Holly Hopkins, jazz, 8 to 11 p.m. |
The Alleyway ran four nights of jazz that week, and its sets started and ended later than those next door. Both rooms belong to the same owners. You can pick between a band and a conversation just by crossing the alley.
The rest of that week's listings show how unusual a quiet room is in Cornelius. On the same Friday, Torrence & Knox had John Tice playing rock at 7 p.m., Bin110 had classic rock from Vinyl Live at 9, and Rudder & Rose had The Hit Squad playing pop at 10. Lost Worlds Brewing opened Friday with Ryan Mullaney at 6. Boatyard LKN sold tickets to a Spice Girls tribute on Friday, then to a Rusty Rudder 10-Year Reunion on Saturday featuring Post Malone and Ella Langley tribute acts. Every one of those listings was a band or a solo performer playing pop, rock or country. The Alleyway was built around jazz you can talk over.
When each room closes
The Alleyway also changes how late a quieter night can go. Its launch hours are 5 p.m. to midnight, Tuesday through Saturday, and the owners told Cornelius Today the schedule could change. Harp & Crown's posted hours close it at 10 p.m. most nights and 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and it is closed on Tuesdays. That means on a Tuesday, the new lounge is open while the pub next door is dark. It also stays open an hour or two later than Harp & Crown on every other night it's open.
Here's how that compares with the latest posted hours elsewhere in town, from latest to earliest:
- Rudder & Rose: open until 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday and until midnight the rest of the week. It opens at 3 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. on weekends.
- The Alleyway: until midnight, Tuesday through Saturday.
- Lake House Wine Bar & Grill, 18665 Harborside Drive: until 11 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 10 p.m. on other nights. This is the former Port City Club. Cornelius Today reported that Port City first opened in 2013 and reopened under its new name in late 2024.
- Torrence & Knox, 20936 Torrence Chapel Road: the kitchen closes at 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and the restaurant notes that the bar may stay open later.
- Peninsula Prime: 4 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 4 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, closed Sunday.
Bin110 works on a different schedule. Its live shows start at 9 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, around the time several kitchens on this list are winding down.
The places that stay open late in Cornelius are on the water or along the West Catawba side of town. Lost Worlds Brewing is at 19700-D One Norman Blvd. None of the late-night places above are in Old Town.
Why the quiet room isn't on Catawba Avenue's other end
Old Town has gained plenty of new storefronts. In September, Cornelius Today counted the recent arrivals:
- Pure Olive, Starlight Bakery, Old Town Vinyl and Jaleedy's Dairy Bar on Catawba Avenue
- Dutchman's Casual Living, which moved to Oak Street Mill
- Core Café Pilates and Bodybar Pilates
- The Puckett Pottery House and new Cain Center offices in the Goodrum House
- Seaboy, The Corner Crust and Willow Wood Coffee
Almost all of these are daytime businesses. The same report said nightlife "remain[s] a challenge." Barley Market, at 20052 Zion Avenue, is still the only true bar or brewery downtown.
Two breweries were expected to change that, and neither has opened. Plans for Fruitful Roots Brewery were dropped. The other is the Olde Mecklenburg project, a mixed-use development once called Greenway Gartens that its developer, Northwood Ravin, renamed Briar Square. The most recent public update, a September 2025 Cornelius Today report, said the old Curtis Screw building had been torn down, construction permits had been issued and land-development work had begun. The plan included a microbrewery, a brewpub and taproom, an indoor event space, commercial space, apartments and townhomes. A year later, in September 2026, Cornelius Today reported no public progress on the brewery.
The town has a long-range plan for downtown. On July 20, 2026, the Town Board unanimously adopted the 2050 Downtown Master Plan. It covers redevelopment, land use, transportation, and arts and branding. For now, Old Town's evenings still center on one venue.
Old Town's evening anchor is a theater
That venue is the Cain Center for the Arts. In the mid-October listings, it was the only Old Town name, with paid 7:30 p.m. shows on both Friday and Saturday: the Americana band Chatham Rabbits, then the Pink Floyd tribute Dark Echoes.
Here's the Cain Center's posted calendar for the rest of the year:
- Friday, Nov. 6, 7:30 p.m.: ABACAB, The Music of Genesis, Phil Collins & Peter Gabriel
- Thursday, Dec. 3, 7:30 p.m.: White Christmas
- Thursday, Dec. 17, 7 p.m.: the Ugly Seasonal Sweater Soiree
On a show night in Old Town, there are two places to go: the theater and Barley Market. If you're looking for a candlelit cocktail and live jazz you can talk over, that's now an evening on West Catawba, Tuesday through Saturday, across the alley from a pub that still books rock bands. If you'd rather stay downtown, the next possible addition is the Briar Square brewpub, and its last public construction update was in September 2025.
If you're weighing parts of Cornelius by what's within reach after dark, from the shoreline to Old Town, Juliet Thomas would be glad to talk it through over coffee or a cocktail. Let's Connect.
